One Sweet Day

I am so sorry I have been MIA lately with my blog! My husband and I came up with an idea called “Relief Portraits” a few weeks ago, and we have been thinking of that and only that for the past few weeks. Relief Portraits began as an idea to take free family portraits for those who lost everything, including their personal photos, due to the devastating tornadoes that swept through our hometown on April 27. As more people found out about our project and wanted to help, it turned into a bigger and more awesome day. A group called Project Blessings donated thousands of brand new clothes from Belk so that people could shop for a new outfit to wear for their picture and for clothes to take home, American Christian Academy donated their gym to use as the location, a local salon donated their makeup artists so the women could feel beautiful, other photographers came to help take pictures, daycare workers came to care for the children, the Druid City Garden Project provided a delicious lunch straight from the farmer’s market, a local photography store offered to print the photos for free…The list goes on and on of people, family, and friends who donated their time and resources to make this a special day for families in need. We can’t thank you all enough.

The event happened this past Saturday, and it was the sweetest day I have ever been a part of. Over 78 families came to have their picture taken and to start rebuilding some memories. One lady said she will hang the picture up in her new apartment and consider it her “survival photo.” Our goal for the day was not just to give people a new family picture, but to really love on these people and give them a break from all of the pain they have been dealing with since the storm. I noticed that most families who came into the event were very somber and reserved, and almost every group that left after hanging out, shopping, and having their picture taken was smiling and laughing. THAT was what it was all about, in my opinion. We wanted to give these families a break and allow them receive nothing but love for just one day.

I learned so much during the few weeks that we worked to make this happen. There is absolutely no better feeling than using your gifts to bless others, and NOTHING feels better than spreading God’s love to others. To me, that is what life and happiness is all about.

Here are a few of the precious people who we met on Saturday…
